Laser Vision Correction is one of the most exciting technological advances
in the history of eye care. It is performed with an excimer laser which
combines argon and fluoride gases to produce a "cool" ultra-violet
light that does not cut or burn tissue. There are two ways of utilizing
this extraordinary technology, PRK and LASIK. Both procedures are
performed by an ophthalmologist specializing in Laser Vision Correction.
For more information about any of these procedures, please contact
the doctors from Dramatic Makeover today.
How do LASIK and Laser Vision Correction work?
The procedure is remarkably
fast. Within 15 to 40 seconds, a computer-guided, "cold" laser
beam is used to reshape the cornea and improve distance vision. Unlike
RK (radial keratotomy), a refractive surgery technique, laser vision
treatment does not require incisions into the deep layers of the cornea
with a blade. Rather, corneal cells at the outer surface of the eye are
gradually eliminated to exact specifications by the excimer laser's pulsing
beam. Though the procedure itself is brief, a thorough process involving
patient preparation and follow-up care is required.
Is it painful?
There is little, if any discomfort during refractive
surgery procedures because the cornea and eye are anesthetized by drops.
On the
night of
your procedure, you may have some medication for discomfort as needed.
During the first day or two, most people have a slight irritation, although
the amount of discomfort varies with each individual and each procedure.
Irritation usually disappears in a day or two and you may be sensitive
to light for several days.
Will I see 20/20 after my procedure?
Your corrected vision following
Laser Eye Surgery depends on the degree of nearsightedness, farsightedness
and astigmatism as well as other individual
factors. As with any surgical procedure the results are not guaranteed.
However, 99% of our patients see 20/40 or better (enough to pass a driver's
exam) without correction. And most patients achieve 20/20 or 20/25.
Approximately 6% of patients require an enhancement to achieve their
goal.
Is Laser Eye Surgery permanent?
Yes, the laser is in effect permanently
reshaping your cornea. Your cornea will remain this way the rest of your "healthy" life.
What are the most common side effects?
The most common side effects are:
fluctuating vision (which only lasts for the first few days), night
glare which typically lasts for the
first few weeks ), and dry eye (which only lasts for the first few weeks).
What happens at the complimentary evaluation?
You will learn more about
refractive surgery as an option to glasses and contacts. The staff will
read your glasses (please bring them) and
let you know if you are a likely candidate for the procedure, although
the final determination is made during the pre-surgical evaluation. You
may watch a videotape and discuss how refractive surgery works, its risks
and benefits, see our surgical suite, meet the staff, talk to other patients
who have had the procedure, and have all your questions answered. If
the schedule permits, you may be able to watch live laser vision treatments!
Please ask the staff if this is possible.
When will I be able to return to work?
Most people can return to work 1
to 3 days following their refractive surgery procedure.
What about long-term side effects of Laser Eye Surgery?
LASIK is a more
advanced form of keratomelusis which was developed over 40 years ago.
The advances in laser technology and microkeratomes has
made the LASIK procedure precise and predictable. Long-term studies
by the FDA have been extremely positive.
How long does the procedure actually take?
The laser treatment time is
typically less than one minute. Most patients will be in the laser room
for about 15 minutes for the actual laser eye
surgery procedure. Total time spent at the laser center on the day of
surgery is usually about two hours.
Will I need reading glasses?
The need for reading glasses is a natural
process of the eye. This begins to effect most people in their early
40's. Following Laser Eye Surgery
you will still need reading glasses at that time of your life. We will
more thoroughly discuss this with you during your consultation.
